Abstract
The
article
explores
the
heterogeneity
of
consumer
attitudes
to
biotech
foods
in
South
Korea
using
factor
and
cluster
analysis
. The
questionnaire
, which had been
implemented
earlier
in the
USA
was
modified
for
cultural
differences
and was
administered
through
personal
interviews
with
570
respondents
by
Gallup
South
Korea
in
2003
.
Six
factors
accounted
for
61%
of the
variation
in
responses
:
1)
the
importance
of '
naturalness
' in
foods
;
2)
purchasing
incentives
,
such
as
price
, but
including
taste
,
health
or
environmental
benefits
;
3)
convenience
and '
comfort
' in
food
;
4)
perceived
risks
of
various
types
;
5)
the
effort
it
takes
to be
well-informed
and
6)
the
willingness
to
try
new
foods
. The
authors
identify
four
consumer
segments
,
including
those
who
place
a
high
premium
on the
naturalness
of
food
, those
who
are
unsure
or
require
more
information
about
biotechnology
, and those
who
are
willing
to
try
new
foods
.
